BIODIVERSITY
We not only stand for variety diversity, but also for biological diversity.
We not only stand for variety diversity, but also for biological diversity.
Whether cocoa, hazelnuts, milk or sugar from sugar beet – natural raw materials form the basis for our delicious chocolate. An intact environment will therefore ensure our continued enjoyment of chocolate in the future. Alongside climate change, species extinction is one of the greatest ecological challenges. That is why we are actively committed to preserving natural habitats – both at our locations and in cocoa cultivation.
In our cocoa programmes, we promote sustainable cocoa cultivation in an agroforestry system – an ecological mixed culture that combines cocoa with other plant species. This creates a habitat for diverse flora and fauna while simultaneously strengthening cocoa cultivation.

Our Farm
Cocoa Famring in a Harmony with Nature
We are setting an example: on our El Cacao cocoa farm, it goes without saying that we also grow cocoa in an agroforestry
system. But only half of the total area is cultivated. The other half, 1,200 hectares
of forest and wetlands, remains
completely untouched in order to protect biodiversity. Experts from the University
of Managua regularly monitor the biodiversity on our farm.
Biodiversity on the Doorstep:
Biodiversity also plays an important role in the annual sustainability projects organised by our trainees and students. For example, they have built a large insect hotel in cooperation with NABU or created a snack garden with the Listhof e.V. environmental education centre.
We promote biodiversity not only outside Europe, but also directly at our production sites. Whether it’s the nature park in Waldenbuch or the wildflower meadow in Breitenbrunn.

actively committed to protecting and preserving natural habitats.
In the BioVal research project, we are working with universities and companies to promote a positive impact on biodiversity in food cultivation and production. The aim is to understand the impact of individual
raw materials on biodiversity and then to map out specific measures. In our so-called “real laboratory”, we support the development of the tool in collaboration with our suppliers directly under real conditions in everyday life.
