Sustainable Packaging

Our goal is to convert all Ritter Sport packaging starting from  2025 to materials made from renewable raw materials. After consumption, they will enter the recycling process as a valuable material. In this context, not only theoretical recyclability plays a role, but also the actual recycling rate.

FULLY RECYCLABLE

With all the materials we use, we pay attention to recyclability and, wherever possible, fully recyclable use materials. In particular, our paper and cardboard materials are FCS certified and completely recyclable – just like our polypropylene chocolate foils.Since 1991, we are using polypropylene for our film packaging. Compared to other types of packaging, it saves transport weight and due to its sealing properties, it protects our chocolate squares optimally. However, we are aware that the recycling rate for polypropylene, in particular, is unfortunately meager worldwide, which is why we are not satisfied with this.

CERTIFIED MATERIALS

The FSC seal certifies that the materials labeled with it are made with wood from sustainable forestry. The criteria are that the forests are used following the social, economic, and ecological needs of current and future generations. All our primary films have been assessed according to the "cradle-to-cradle" Material Health Standard since July 2020 and have the Material Health Bronze Status. It certifies that all the material ingredients are transparently listed and evaluated to optimize the materials' recyclability.

PAPERBASED SOLUTIONS

The majority of our primary packaging is currently still made of polypropylene. Although this material is already fully recyclable, it often ends up in regular residual waste and is, therefore, de facto not recycled. To change that, we are working with various partners on the development of paper packaging. We can pack our entire range by starting from  2025 at the latest while maintaining the quality and safety standards for which we are known.
