Further information:

Sunflower seeds are obviously the seeds of sunflowers. They contain 49% sunflower oil, 22% protein, 12% carbohydrates, 6% dietary fibres, and 3% minerals. Their oil content makes them an important raw ingredient in edible oil production. Apart from that they contain a lot of potassium, magnesium, B-vitamins, as well as vitamins A and E. This makes them a healthy energy pack. Sunflower seeds are not only healthy but also tasty. They are, therefore, also used in mueslis as well as in, and on, all kinds of baked goods.

The seeds are taken from the sunflower, “Helianthus annuus”, which is a member of the daisy family. It is known for always turning its flower towards the sun. This behaviour is also why it is known as “Helianthus”, which derives from the Greek, “Helios”, and translates as, “sun”. The sunflower originally originates from Mexico and North America. It has been cultivated worldwide since its importance as a source of oil was recognised. Its variety of types ranges from garden and decoration varieties, to oil and utilisable varieties. It is a perennial plant and can grow up to 3m high. Its flowering head, which can grow to 60cm in width, and which is usually bright yellow, is particularly decorative. Its leaves and stem have a lightly bristled hairiness. Each plant has only one flowering head. This consists of a great many small, inconspicuous flowers in the centre, and is encircled by large petals. Each successfully pollinated flower in the flower’s head will later grow into a sunflower seed.

RITTER SPORT uses sunflower seeds for a special variety of chocolate, which up to now has only been available in Russia. This is because Russians are particularly huge sunflower seed fans.
