The Forastero cocoa tree is characterised by its robustness and diminished susceptibility to disease. It is more commonly farmed because it yields greater harvests than fine cocoa varieties. Forastero cocoa is in nearly every bar of chocolate there is, either in its pure form, or in combination with other varieties of cocoa.

Chocolates made with Forastero cocoa are usually sold without indicating the variety, or origins, of the cocoa beans.
